I want to share some light in the middle of this craziness of a world Pandemic today. We are building a house!!! Well, we aren’t building it, some amazing humans are. It’ll be ready this summer! Don’t worry, I plan to bring you all along every step of the way :). There is a WILD story of how we got to this moment of BUILDING our own home, and I am so excited to finally share it with you today.
We’ve kept this announcement close to our hearts over the last few months.
The last year has been crazy for me. I got married, moved twice, and changed jobs (grade levels) amongst other things. I’ve always been on the edge of my seat for what’s next. If I’m really being honest, I’ve found myself taking control of what’s next rather than considering what God has next for me.
Specifically, I really, REALLY, wanted a house.
It was a dream I had been chasing for years and I couldn’t get it out of my head. Back in October of 2019 we almost bought one. Like we were so close. The sold sign was out. Our families knew. We had a closing date. It was happening. Then, about a month later I went to Teddy (my husband) and said “I’m scared, and I don’t think we should do this.” He looked at me and said “Me either.” It was as if a huge (hundreds of thousands) pound weight was lifted off of me.
I didn’t know it then, but it took me going in over my head on something I desired for God to work in my heart and reveal to me the things that really matter.
Everything was put into perspective in an instant when we decided to walk away from the thing I wanted most.
My husband matters.
My family matters.
My new little puppy matters.
Having the ability to save money and give money to those who needed it matters.
I almost shrunk all of those HUGE, IMPORTANT things into insignificance for a house because I wanted to get out of our one bedroom apartment so badly.
We are HOME! A few months later something crazy happened.
On New Years Eve, we were in Georgia for Passion Conference. An opportunity arose to build a smaller house, on our dream street, across from some amazing friends of ours, right in time for our apartment lease to be up this summer (it’s funny how God works like that, right?). We were ready this time because we surrendered control and said “Lord, do Your thing and we will be ready whenever YOU are ready.” I’ve seen a sign on Pinterest a thousand times that says “love grows best in small places.” While I’m excited to create a home that we will grow our family in and share this journey with you, I’ll never take for granted the things that really matter.
What house questions do you have?! Leave them in a comment below because I’ve learned SO much throughout this process that I want to share with you! For more day to day updates, be sure to follow me on Instagram @simplyemilye!
